It took many hard, painful, unnecessary lessons before I realized that perhaps I should follow the suggestions of others and stop trying to run the show. In my active addiction I always did whatever I wanted and was very set in my ways. Although, most all of what I was doing with my life didn’t ever really amount to much. I tried many different things to get sober. I thought I knew best, but what I didn’t know is that I needed to give up my will and let my higher power take the lead. Also, I needed to learn to take suggestions from the people that had lived through much of what I was going through and had changed their lives for the better. Once I started taking suggestions and put my ego and pride to the side my life started to change for the better as well. It didn’t happen overnight; by changing my attitude and practicing behaving in a more positive manor, my life started to turn around. In addition, taking suggestions like going to meetings, getting a sponsor, working the steps and doing therapy, were also very beneficial contributions to my life. I now live a life beyond my wildest dreams and I am grateful for the people that helped me along my journey and stayed by my side through the hard times. I now work in the recovery field and am able to help and share with others the same suggestions that were so kindly shared with me!
